Virginia World War I and World War II Commemoration Commission
Media Center

Background Information:

The Virginia World War I and World War II Commemoration Commission was created by the Virginia General Assembly during its 2016 Session (HB 30) by expanding the existing World War II 75th Anniversary Commission to include programs and observances marking the 100th anniversary of World War I.

Over four years, the Commission is carrying out programs to recognize the 75th anniversary of World War II and the 100th anniversary of World War I. The Commission is guided by its purpose to:

  • Honor our veterans, whose sacrifices can never be forgotten. When we remember yesterday's veterans communicate to today's service members that they won't be forgotten either.

  • Inspire a desire to learn more by providing opportunities for people to explore personal connections and highlight multiple aspects of Virginia's role in World War I and World War II

  • Connect through travel and tourism by making it easy for visitors to connect to museums, memorials, and sites in Virginia related to World War I and World War II.

Among the Commission’s projects are a mobile tour—Profiles of Honor—that brings an interactive exhibit to sites across Virginia, signature events marking significant anniversaries, and statewide teacher institutes.
