The Virginia World War I and World War II Commemoration Commission was created by the General Assembly to plan, develop, and carry out programs and activities to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I and the 75th anniversary of World War II.

Virginia Commonwealth University's Virtual Curation Laboratory (VCL) has been live since 2011. Originally as a means of recording American Indian artifacts for research and preservation, the project was started by Dr. Bernard K. Means of the University’s anthropology department. 5 years later, the online library now collates a host of 3D scanned objects including excavated animal bones and, most recently, a Thanksgiving dinner. This December, VCL will demonstrate its 3D scanning...

The Five Payne Brothers: An Alexandria Family & Their Service.

A number of families sent multiple siblings off to fight in the Second World War.  The most famous were the five Sullivan brothers from Waterloo, Iowa, who served together on the light cruiser USS Juneau.  Tragically, all five brothers perished when the ship was torpedoed and sunk in November, 1942.  Alexandria sent its own family of five brothers off to war: The Paynes...

REMEMBERING DEC 7, 1941

On December 7, 1941 in the US territory of Hawaii, scores of Japanese fighters and bombers launched a surprise attack against the United States and the pacific fleet anchored at Pearl Harbor. This tragic event would become the catalyst for America's involvement in WWII, and would remain one of the worst attacks on american soil for decades to come. Now, 75 years later, we look back on this turning point in American history.
